Wendy Maruyama: Tag Project/Executive Order 9066 exhibition and

Start Date: Feb. 01, 2013
Time: 9:00 AM

What: The Arkansas Arts Center, the state’s premiere center for visual and performing arts, presents the Wendy Maruyama: Tag Project/Executive Order 9066 exhibition and Edward Weston: Leaves of Grass exhibition, on view February 1 - April 21 in the Townsend Wolfe and Jeannette Edris Rockefeller Galleries. When: February 1- April 21, 2013 Where: Arkansas Arts Center 501 East 9th Street Little Rock, Arkansas 72203 Townsend Wolfe and Jeannette Edris Rockefeller Galleries Why: The Tag Project/Executive Order 9066 exhibition combines two projects of Wendy Maruyama, head of the studio furniture program at San Diego University. Maruyama has created a compelling body of work inspired by her ancestry and the mass internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. In the Tag Project, Maruyama replicated 120,000 individual identification tags worn by internees throughout the 10 U.S. relocation camps, including two in Arkansas. The Leaves of Grass exhibition is comprised of 53 gelatin-silver prints by American photographer Edward Weston. Weston is considered one of the great Modernist photographers of the 20th century and was a founding member of Group f/64. He was well-known for his compositional sensibility and his superb printing skills and was highly regarded for his photographs of natural forms, close-ups, nudes and landscapes.
